When David Harbour reached out to Arnold Schwarzenegger

David Harbour was recently a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live. While discussing the massively popular 4th season of Stranger Things, Harbour mentioned an iconic prop they used for the show’s finale. Jimmy showed him a still from Conan the Barbarian, where Arnold was wielding his sword. David, who didn’t expect Jimmy to have the picture, was pleasantly surprised. “Basically, I’m in the same pose staring down the camera, and I wanted to know what he thought of my technique. But he never got back to me.” said the millionaire actor.

After hearing David’s statement, Jimmy gave him an encouraging response. “Well, hopefully, he’ll see this and he will contact you,” said Jimmy Kimmel. However, Jimmy couldn’t end the section without cracking a joke. He pointed to the still of Arnold Schwarzenegger and said, “It’s worth noting right now, just for the hell of it, that this man was the governor of the state of California.”

David Harbour also told Jimmy another fun fact about the movie. He said while filming Conan the Barbarian, Arnold used three swords. One of them is in Arnold’s office. David kept the one from the show. However, David said he knew nothing about the third sword.

How the bodybuilder trained to wield the sword

In the film, Arnold swings around the now iconic sword with ease. However, the former Mr. Olympia underwent rigorous training before wielding the sword. When Schwarzenegger signed up for the role, he weighed around 240 lbs and felt awkward holding the sword. Director John Milius wanted Arnold to get a more athletic look, so Arnie trained for 18 months.

The bodybuilding champion dropped 30 lbs and trained with an 11 lbs broadsword, for two hours every day, for three months. Besides combat training, Arnie also ran, rode horses, climbed, swam, and did weight lifting to transform into Conan.
