The idea came about in 2019 when he won his first Mr. Olympia Classic Physique. It was also the year he donned the mustache on the stage for the first time. The next year, the mustache was back, and so was the victory. Since then, the mustache has become an integral part of his Mr. Olympia preparations. Before 2019, Bumstead has participated in the contest twice but had no good luck.
