In 1986, the seven-time Mr.Olympia winner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, married the Kennedy ancestor, Maria Shriver. However, after 25 years of magnificent marriage, they separated from each other. It happened due to the revelation of Arnold fathering a love child with his housekeeper, Mildred Baena, in 2011. 

Despite the separation, they decided to finalize their divorce. It was a huge step for the couple as they were once in love. They appreciated each other’s support in various interviews at the beginning of their marriage. In addition, once Arnold complimented Shriver’s willpower to lose pregnancy weight.

Arnold Schwarzenegger glorifies Shriver’s willpower

In 1992, Schwarzenegger appeared on the show of his old friend, Oprah Winfrey. Actress, Dyan Cannon, a Golden Globe award winner, also joined them in the conversation. There Oprah asked Arnold l, how Maria was looking fabulous in those days. 

She asked, “You know I noticed I noticed too, Arnold that Maria is her. She’s looking fabulous lately. You do you get on her if she gains five pounds? No, you don’t.” Meanwhile, Arnold replied, “I never talked to Maria about that at all. Everything that you see when Maria gains weight because of pregnancy and then she loses it again after it’s her doing.”

The Governator added, “It’s her willpower that she has and her desire of looking good and also pleasing me, uh to look great you know so I think that uh and she’s also been always very athletic and has exercised every day for an hour.” There was a time when their relationship was considered the goal for other couples. But the news of Arnie’s affair with Baena wrecked their healthy marriage.

Maria’s point of view on her marriage with Arnie

In an another interview with Oprah Winfrey, Maria was asked to share her views on marriage. As a wife and mother, she listed several points and how they affect a woman. She said, “What is working for you, what’s not, how do you feel about it, and what is going on with kids? It’s communicating, It’s talking, giving, and taking; It’s going maybe places he wants to go; I don’t want to go. It’s him accepting things about me and me accepting things about him. It’s me not trying to change him even though I would like to change a couple of things.”

Breaking the marriage of 25 years was not an easy task for Maria either. Despite the disagreement of the former couple on everything, they decided to co-parent their kids. With time Shriver’s appearance in the video became more as she started spreading awareness for Alzheimer’s.
