He redefined the outlook on bodybuilders by disproving that bodybuilders are not only confined to lifting massive weights and working out aggressively, but also have other passions like art. In this throwback interview, he shared about his journey through self-discovery as an academic person.

Fascinated by the limitless possibilities bodybuilding offers, Greene was curious to learn more. Eventually, he got his hands on Arnold’s Encyclopedia of bodybuilding. He recalled working hard towards getting where he wanted to be.

“I wanted to become a professional bodybuilder,” Greene said. He shared he had a reason to apply some of the skills learned in the book. It wasn’t about strength, but about identifying himself as an “academic” and “intelligent person” who could think about intellectual pursuits.

As a passionate budding bodybuilder, he performed push-ups until he couldn’t get up. For the same, he revealed he was kept under a suicide watch. He recounted that it took a lot of effort to make them understand that he was preparing himself for the world conferences, contrary to what they felt.

His art is his inspiration

Greene has an ardent love for art; he is renowned for his self-portraits. Interestingly, he uses them as a driving factor to maintain his well-built physique. In fact, by 2011, he had enough artwork to host an exhibition. Greene gave himself a unique description as a bodybuilder. “I am a master sculptor,” he said, referring to how he designed his body.

Furthermore, he said the art show made him realize that he had always been an artist. “My medium is the human physique,” he said. Going further, he said his life is what he makes of it, indicating that he is the creator of his destiny. Comparing life with art, he said, “My life is what I make of it, just like the art I’ve produced.” He also added that he was celebrating his achievements in art as a form of expression.
