“I’m gonna ask you to do a rep, and it’s gonna be like I got a little gun to your baby boy’s head and if you don’t finish this rep, I’m gonna pull the trigger.” That’s the level of intensity Yates expected from him. It traumatized him, as he had just had a son.

Replying to which, Yates said he knew it. “He[Yates] put me through this leg press,” he continued. Yates got three or four reps when he thought he would be done with one. Brian described the jolting experience: “I’m telling you, Ronnie, I had never been to that pain cave before.” Thus, showing what it takes to attain greatness.

Suffering through pain is an everyday affair
Bodybuilding is an extremely competitive sport. The athletes sweat and go through a great deal of agony all year long for those few seconds on stage. Reflecting on how demanding the sport is, he said, “Most guys aren’t willing to go to that pain level every single day, and that’s what it takes to be a competitor.”

Coleman conceded with Brian and said, “I couldn’t have put it better myself and so that’s the difference between the guys that win on the stage and the guys that don’t. It’s whether you’ve gone to that intensity every day.”
