Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger had pretty much had a content and fulfilling life, both on his professional and personal front. He came to the US from a foreign country, won Mr. Olympia multiple times, went on to build a successful movie career, and married the love of his life on April 26, 1986. However, a shocking revelation from him in 2011 ended his relationship with his wife Maria forever.

Schwarzenegger and Shriver thereafter tried everything to mend their broken relationship. That included going to therapy and doing marriage counseling. Schwarzenegger found the experience harrowing, and the therapist biased.

Schwarzenegger hated every minute of therapy

In an exclusive interview with The Atlantic, Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke about the time he confessed to his then-wife Maria Shriver about his infidelity. The confession gave Shriver the shock of a lifetime. It was as if her world was falling apart. The two tried counseling for a while, but that didn’t make things any better. In fact, Schwarzenegger recalls that their counselor wasn’t exactly fair to his clients, i.e. them.

A “Schmuck”, Schwarzenegger called him, who was “definitely on her side”. Schwarzenegger was fully aware of his mistake and that there would be repercussions. However, he believed that a therapist might help bond them back together and solve their problems. Instead, when he saw him taking sides, it dismissed the whole notion of therapy for him. Schwarzenegger hated the whole experience and quit going only after two times.

Recalling the time he committed the adultery, Schwarzenegger said to The Atlantic, “I F***ed up. The f***ing w**nie gets hard and I f**king lose this brain and this happened. It’s one of the biggest mistakes that so many successful people make, you know, so what am I going to say?”

It was clear that Schwarzenegger knew he shouldn’t have done that, and what he did was wrong. But his tone also expressed the frustration and hidden anger at being reminded of it every second of his life.

Schwarzenegger is in a happy space now

Schwarzenegger clearly wanted to move on from that experience. And he still does. But the affair that went public is tough to die down. It was anyway, more than a decade after the affair, that Schwarzenegger confessed to Shriver about it. Schwarzenegger had an illicit affair with his housekeeper, Milfred Baena, in the 1990s. They have a son together, Patrick Baena.

While Schwarzenegger couldn’t really save his marriage with Shriver after that, the two have since come a long way and are happy in their respective spheres today. They also make sure to spend quality time with all their kids, including Baena.
