Phil Heath talks about the rampant drug use among current bodybuilders

In the podcast, Manager Matt (as he is known), asks Heath about his skin texture and if it’s a result of genetics or PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs). He stumbles to say that Heath hasn’t really used heavy PEDs, but asks him about most new-age bodybuilders who do.

Phil Heath replied to Matt, “Well it’s gonna thicken your skin. You’re putting oily substances in your body”, and pauses to chuckle over its sheer absurdity. Heath previously mentioned his own use of steroids, as do many bodybuilders, but he was never over-reliant on it. He continues, “Even we all know that…(pauses)… Now, there’s probably some dum***s that’s probably doing some injection this week and they are gonna blur out the lines in their physique. We all know this”. Heath continues his laughter throughout this.

It was a bold claim by Heath, but something that other retired bodybuilders have discussed before.

Heath cites his own example to dismiss the idea of drug use yields a better body

Phil Heath believes that the fear of a shrunk-down body is what’s forcing the rampant drug use among bodybuilders. However, it is only because they didn’t have the required muscle in the first place drugs inflated their muscle. He said, “You have a bad inflammatory response that could actually be making your organs not work correctly to dry out naturally”.

Heath completely dismisses the idea of relying on drugs to get into perfect shape but does believe that good genetics help. He also mentions how those same drugs could be potentially dangerous to their organs in the long run. Phil Heath may have taken drugs during his professional career but he can proudly say that he never went to extremes.
