The bodybuilding world has seen countless champions over many years. Whether they’ve won the coveted Mr. Olympia title or ventured into filmmaking, they’ve all earned quite a reputation for themselves. Out of these, some of the well-known bodybuilders include Ronnie Coleman, Kai Greene, and 4x Mr. Olympia, Jay Cutler.

While Cutler retired at 40, he has still been an active judge and guest on various interviews and bodybuilding podcasts. In fact, Cutler also has his own YouTube channel where he produces content. In 2019, the legend sat down to talk about certain aspects of bodybuilding that he believed needed improvements.

Being a seasoned athlete, the star had some strong opinions about the lack of a main character in the current bodybuilding scene. He also cited examples of other sports and called out some star players.

While stressing the necessity of having the main character in bodybuilding, Cutler spoke about other sports that had athletes playing a similar role. He mentioned former UFC champion Conor McGregor, an Irish mixed martial artist, and retired professional boxer, Floyd Mayweather.

The bodybuilder took a jab at the MMA fighter, saying “UFC has Conor McGregor, even though he’s not the best fighter on the planet.” While speaking of superstars, he also called out former professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. He stated that the retired boxer was famous despite not having fought anybody significant for a while.

Incidentally, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. took part in one of the most popular fights in combat sports history. Their match was also called ‘The Money Fight’, where Mayweather emerged victorious.

Jay Cutler called on the emergence of a bodybuilding superstar

The former Mr. Olympia talked about the need for a superstar in the bodybuilding field. He recalled how during his days, the reigning superstars of this sport were Arnold, Phil Heath, Kai Greene, and Ronnie Coleman. The bodybuilder stressed how one didn’t have to win the title of Mr. Olympia to be a superstar. A superstar, he defined, was someone who brought attention from the fans, captured the public imagination, and motivated new bodybuilders.

Cutler explained how he was popular among the masses even before he won the title. This was because of his constant on-stage rivalry with then reigning champion – Ronnie Coleman. He cited examples of bodybuilders who did not win Mr. Olympia yet made their presence known to the audience. This included Phil Heath and Kai Greene, who did not appear on stage at that time.
