While growing up with famous parents has its perks, it also has its downsides. Among the most serious is the possibility of never growing out of their shadow. This is especially true when your father is Arnold Schwarzenegger and your mother is Maria Shriver. The ‘Austrian Oak’ is a bodybuilding legend, Hollywood icon, and the former Governor of California. Maria Shriver is a prolific and respected journalist and the niece of John F. Kennedy. However, Patrick Schwarzenegger was always determined to carve his own path.

Determined to become his “own person”

During their conversation, Cosmopolitan asked Schwarzenegger, “What kind of advice do you get from your dad?” Partick Schwarzenegger revealed that his father always encouraged him not to dwell on what others say. “My dad is always saying, ‘Never listen to the naysayers.'”, the young actor said. He also mentioned the incredible journey of the seven-time Mr. Olympia.

“He came from another country with 20 bucks in his pocket and climbed the ladder of success.” Partick Schwarzenegger said during the interview. In 1968, a young Arnold Schwarzenegger came to America from Austria. He had no job, home, or relatives in the new country, nor did he speak fluent English. However, through sheer hard work, ‘Arnie’ found success.

The ‘Austrian Oak’ started a brick-laying business, got a university degree, and pursued his bodybuilding dream. By the time Schwarzenegger starred in his first film Hercules in New York, he was already a millionaire. “It gives me determination to become my own person — not just his son — and make a name for myself.”, the 29-year-old told Cosmopolitan. However, the ‘Governator’ has also similarly inspired his youngest son.

Just like the seven-time Mr. Olympia inspired his youngest son to carve his legacy, Schwarzenegger also had some words of wisdom for Joseph Baena. Baena is the son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mildred Patricia Baena. In a November 2022 interview with People Magazine, Baena revealed what his dad had told him.

“The main thing is just the work, putting in the work, putting in the reps,” the bodybuilding legend told his youngest son when the duo talked about Baena’s Hollywood dreams. Like Partick Schwarzenegger, the 25-year-old also said he doesn’t want to use his father’s connections to get acting opportunities.
