The highest competition for women’s bodybuilding began a decade and a half after men’s bodybuilding contest was first held in 1965. It was first conducted as a part of the Joe Weider’s Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend in 1980 and continued thereafter. Women embraced the opening of the door to the sport and participated with enthusiasm.

There was a five-year break from 2015 to 2019 and was relaunched in 2020. Some top names in the history of Ms. Olympia include Iris Kyle, 10 x Ms. Olympia, Lenda Murray (8), Corinna Everson (6), Kim Chizevksy(4) and Andrea Shaw, the 2020 and 2021 champion.
