For an outsider, the world of bodybuilding and fitness might look like the best way to get the perfect body. However, only a few know the kind of minefield it is. While training is a way to maintain good health, at times excessive training leads to severe consequences. Dryness is one of the techniques used by bodybuilders to showcase their shredded physiques at competitions. Bodybuilding veterans Milos Sarcev and Rich Gaspari recently shed light on the dark side of this technique.

Moreover, it is no news that bodybuilders train hard, day and night, to get the best physique before a competition. However, sometimes they take this preparation a bit too far. Some bodybuilders have also been vocal about the use of PEDs and diuretics. But the price bodybuilders pay because of these diuretics is more than just some bills.

In the latest episode of The Menace Podcast, bodybuilding legends Lee Haney, Rich Gaspari, and Milos Sarcev sat down to discuss the cost of dehydration and conditioning in bodybuilding. Sarcev thinks that judges should stop scoring bodybuilders for dryness. This is because he believes bodybuilders and coaches are now left with no choice but to increase the use of diuretics to get the desired dryness.

Recalling a recent incident, Sarcev said, “Risking dehydration, dangerous dehydration right, then it comes with now, okay, who is responsible here? For me, the dryness that Samson displayed, even on Friday, should be sufficient. But on Saturday, Dennis scared the fu** out of me, I said, ‘okay,’ man, I was dead on that table. I didn’t know I didn’t even enjoy the dinner.”

He then questioned Rich Gaspari about the cost he paid to achieve dryness. Back in the day, Gaspari was famous for his impressive extra-dry physique. Answering Sarcev’s question, Gaspari revealed his dryness wasn’t a result of harsh diuretics.

Rich Gaspari revealed he attained the famous dryness by cutting down his water intake. Unlike modern-day bodybuilders who, according to Gaspari, depend more on drugs, he never used harsh diuretics. Furthermore, he believes he has had the right genetics to be dry.

Gaspari also agreed with Sarcev that coaches nowadays have to make the bodybuilders dry. But using diuretics to do so pulls all the water out of the muscles. In the end, the bodybuilders do not look good enough. He claims, in such cases, the bodybuilders look softer instead of dryer. Talking about Samson’s form at the Arnold Classic, Gaspari commented, “Whatever you did with Samson, to me, he looked dry.”
