“So Much Weight but Got a Little Bit of A** Legs”: Ronnie Coleman’s Best Friend Recalled the Gym Incident That Got Them Close During an Interview in 2022

When Ronnie Coleman was in his prime, he had an exceptional physique that even people from the young generation fail to match. Standing tall at 5’11”, Ronnie did not just dominate with his massive body but also made his competitor drop their jaws in awe because of his build. He was the perfect blend of physique and consistency.

You may recall Ronnie standing in his iconic pose with muscles all flexed, but there is someone special who deserves equal applause for his success. And that’s no one but Ronnie’s trainer Big J. Having seen Ronnie start from scratch, the duo worked together to ensure he transformed into a better bodybuilder.

Big J talks about Ronnie Coleman working out 

Unlike many, Ronnie never wanted to join professional bodybuilding. He was contained in his role in the Police department. Though he had professional commitments, he never gave up on his dream of getting bigger muscles. Thus when he got the offer of a “free gym membership,” he could hardly resist.

Sharing details of Ronnie’s initial days at the gym, Jason English, aka Big J, in a recent podcast with Dave Tate, shares some interesting details. For the unversed, Jason has trained 8x Mr. Olympia Ronnie for over 20 years. The duo has seen several ups and down together. Walking down memory lane, the celebrity coach talked about his first interaction with Ronnie.

During their first encounter, as the coach quoted, “I’m looking at him, and he’s looking at me with that look, and I asked, you know, the person I was training with– “What’s he doing?” Though Ronnie already had a good body, his body was not properly proportioned during the said time. Sharing his honest thought, he said, “How come he come he got some so much weight but got a little bit of a** legs?”

As Ronnie remained pretty clueless about what was happening, English assured the young man by stating, “We’re going to change your training” With this being said, the rest became history. Ronnie became one of the finest in the sport’s history.

A big part of Coleman’s successful career, Big J helped him follow a diet and exercise routine that best suited him. To give a glimpse of what Ronnie did back at the gym, the successful trainer once revealed Mark Bell, the routine that The King followed for almost 20 years. Sharing the details, he informed four sets of 20 reps of-

  • Cable Rows
  • Behind-the-neck Pulldowns
  • Single Arm Hammer Strength Rows
  • Dumbbell Pullovers
  • Alternating Dumbbell Curls
