“There Was a Lot of Money at Stake”: Jay Cutler Who Dethroned Ronnie Coleman, Once Opened Up on Tensions Between the Duo During Bodybuilding Career

Ronnie Coleman won the Mr. Olympia contest eight times consecutively and earned himself the title “The King.” On the other hand, Jay Cutler won the Mr. Olympia contest four times after coming second to Ronnie Coleman. Cutler became majorly famous because of his rivalry with Ronnie Coleman after he ended Coleman’s winning streak in 2006.

One might infer that Coleman’s streak motivated Cutler to win the competition and not just be remembered as a runner-up. In a video, posted on JayCutlerTV in 2017, Cutler opened up about the tensions between the two.

Cutler said that he had a lot of respect for Ronnie Coleman, and Ronnie felt the same for him. The two were the highest-paid bodybuilders of their time when it came to endorsements. The tension between the two was primarily because of the money involved.

Cutler said, “The truth is we had a lot of tension, there was a lot of money at stake. You know we were two highest-paid guys. We signed the biggest contracts in probably bodybuilding history ever.

During their prime, magazine endorsements were massive sources of income. According to Cutler, the BSN contract signed by Coleman and the MuscleTech signed by him were the biggest ever contracts.

Although what Cutler once wanted the most was to dethrone Ronnie Coleman, after doing so, his thoughts changed about Ronnie. Cutler said, “When Ronnie was gone after I beat him at o7 it wasn’t as fun“. He missed their time in Pittsburgh and how they laughed and joked together.

Cutler then talked about the best time of his career and what he loved the most about it. The 49-year-old bodybuilder said that his battles with Ronnie Coleman were his absolute favorite. Cutler also felt that bodybuilding wasn’t the same without Coleman.
