If there’s one man whose name rings when one hears ‘modern building,’ it is Phil Heath—winning the prestigious title of Mr. Olympia for seven consecutive years from 2011 to 2017. He is the face of modern-day bodybuilding. With an impressive 5’9″ height, 23″ arm, 54″ chest, and 29 “waist, his physique is undeniably incredible.
Looking at his impressive physique, one may think Phil works with heavy weights. But is it so? Was he like Ronnie Coleman, lifting weights equal to that of a car while working out? Let’s find out!

The icon prefers to keep things simple
Unlike his bodybuilding counterparts, Phil does not emphasize lifting heavy weights. He instead focuses on lifting lighter weights with perfect form. It may surprise many, but Phil does not see the point in doing heavy t-bar rows, barbell rows, or deadlifts.

Instead, he concentrates on more mind-body activities, where he can feel his upper back working the hardest. Sharing about his workout routine, he said, “I’m really just trying to work on constant tension.” He knows his training methods are not that common, so people may have reservations. He confesses, “A lot of people have very many questions as to how I train.”

However, he remains unaffected by the opinions and does what best suits him. He further adds, “Usually, my goal is to keep constant tension on the muscle. I believe more muscle activation builds more muscle mass.” Phil thus prefers to keep it slow. He usually trains five days per work, dedicating special workouts for each major muscle group.

Phil Heath has been the most dominant name in bodybuilding in modern times. It was announced in mid-July this year that Phil will remain off the bodybuilding stage for the 2022 Olympia. He would, however, serve as the color commentator for the event.

Even though he will stay away from the stage, he is not neglecting his body. From his latest Instagram post and workout videos, we can safely assume that he is keeping his body stage-ready. He undeniably remains focused on his health and is careful about his physique.
