51-Year-Old Ripped Mark Wahlberg Takes a ‘Cold Plunge Challenge’

Cold plunges or ice baths are an extremely common pastime in the Nordic countries. However, the activity has gained more popularity in recent times, especially in North America, as more people are learning about its many health benefits. In a recent social media update, fitness fanatic Mark Wahlberg is also seen taking a cold plunge and experiencing a shiver like never before.

Mark Wahlberg was born in Boston, Massachusetts, where the temperatures have even dropped to -10 degrees Fahrenheit. But the coldness he experienced, as someone in his early fifties, in the ice-cold water in a tank was something of otherworldly nature.

Mark Wahlberg recently wrote on his Instagram, “I thought Boston was cold”. ‘A pair of eyes’ emoji, indicating his surprise to find how cold the water actually was, followed the caption. He had also tagged “municipal”, his brand of sport utility gear, and “renutherapy”. Renu Therapy is a manufacturer in California, that provides some of the best cold plunge tanks for indoor and outdoor use. He also said in the clip, “cold plunge challenge” before entering his tank full of water.

The impact of the ice-cold water could be felt on Wahlberg’s face and expressions. However, as a health-conscious person, Mark Wahlberg is aware of the many benefits of a cold plunge. A recent video by WIRED explained why more and more people are cold plunging, and how it affects the overall growth and well-being of the body, in more ways than previously known.

In the video, Dr. Susanna Soberg, a metabolic scientist, author, and founder of the Soberg Institute said that the cold stressor affects every cell in the body. It increases the overall metabolism and helps in muscle growth and fat storage. It also provides a well-rounded mental balance. The cold water will also lead to an increase in noradrenaline, which breaks down the brown adipose tissue. This prevents lifestyle diseases like Type 2 diabetes.

It also activates the blood vessels and contracts the blood flow to the arms and legs of a person. This keeps the blood warm in the center of the body. There is also an increase in dopamine, which gives them a natural high, thus driving their motivation. Increased secretion of serotonin gives a mental balance.

The benefits are myriad. More research and explorations are ongoing on a cold plunge. But for now, it is enough for any fitness enthusiast to bear the pain of jumping into cold water. This includes Pain and Gain star, Mark Wahlberg, who starts his 4 am workout routine with a Bulgarian split.
