Chess is like cricket, a gentleman’s game. Most players are laser-focused on the boards, hoping not to make any mistakes. However, Magnus Carlsen is completely the opposite. Apart from his heroics, his antics during games are equally famous. American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura experienced it first stand during the 2020 Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz.

As the game started, Carlsen arrived shirtless, surprising Nakamura, who looked perplexed. Even though his strange tactics are no secret, this was a first.
Magnus Carlsen arrives shirtless
As he arrived for the game, the Norwegian appeared shirtless, looking to figure out his first move of the match. This left the challenger shocked, watching his opponent button his shirt as he arrived in style. Notably, the grandmaster arrived a minute later as he kept Nakamura waiting for the online tournament that had a pot prize of $250,000.

With the opening move in Chess named as a gambit, this led to many people calling it out as a ‘shirtless gambit’ move from Carlsen. Known for a variety of opening moves, Carlsen is one of the best in playing mind games with his opponents. Hence, the shirtless assassin once again showed the world why he is the best, in all aspects of the game.

Carlsen lost the game
Although he arrived in ‘style’, Carlsen played the Sicilian Defence while playing black pieces. However, he soon arrived at a conclusion as Carlsen entered a losing position while withdrawing from the game. Moreover, the Jamaican-American grandmaster and chess commentator Maurice Ashley spoke about how Carlsen’s antics stunned him!
“I am just so stunned by what just happened,” said Ashley.
Even though Carlsen dominated the slower time control rapid event, he could not muster up an excellent performance against Nakamura. Hence, the loss came quickly as he resigned from the game. On the other hand, Nakamura finished third with 21 points. Despite of that, fans remember the game for Magnus Carlsen, arriving shirtless.
