In the horse racing world, the Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse Dark Angel has made quite a name for itself. The equine has raced on all major courses, including Chester Racecourse, Royal Ascot, York Racecourse, Doncaster Racecourse, and others. His racing career as a two-year-old spanned only six months in 2007.

In that span of such a short time, he won four races, including the G2 Mill Reef S. at Newbury and the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket. Following this, he retired from racing and became a stud at the age of three. And now, in the horse racing world, his name is soaring once again as he reigns supreme as an eighteen-year-old.

Dark Angel makes waves again

In a recent post by Thoroughbred Daily News, the handle shared the list of the “Leading European sires of sprinters in 2023”. And atop that list was Dark Angel, now part of Yeomanstown Stud in Irelan, dominating as a sire. The post’s caption read, “DARK ANGEL, standing at @YeomanstownStud is on top of the world again in 2023…”

With 15 Group 1 winners, 57 Group winners, 100 stakes winners, and 30 of Dark Angel’s offspring who were sold for over €100,000, the Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred sire surpassed names like Havana Grey, Kodiac, and No Nay Never. Although Dark Angel’s career only spanned a short time, his contribution as a stud makes him one of the leading sires in Britain and Ireland as of December 5, 2023.

Dark Angle: Contribution and legacy in the horse racing world

Born of Sire Acclamation (GB) in 1999, a high-class racer who won the Diadem Stakes in 2003, and out of Dam Midnight Angel (GB) in 1994, the daughter of Machiavellian who has never been raced, his bloodline has many major winners. Dark Angel’s first season as a sire was in 2011, and his offspring quickly proved to be successful on the racetrack.
