“Heartbreaking for Beautiful Creatures”: 10-Year-Old Race Horse’s Loss Following Unrecoverable Injury Leaves Sports World in Anguish

Horse racing attracts fans across the world. Though the event provides ultimate entertainment, the game is not an exception for accidents. Both riders and horses risk their lives for winning tournaments. There are several cases of horse fatalities that are a cause of concern in the sport. And the sport is not in good name with Animal welfare organizations.

Recently a horse calamity that occurred during the Grand National, 2023 has caused huge resentment among animal lovers. Responding to the video of the incident shared by Mirror on Facebook, netizens condemned the sport citing its cruelty towards horses.

Hill Sixteen lost its life while racing in the Randox Grand National 2023

A 10-year-old horse, Hill Sixteen, succumbed to injuries after suffering a major fall while competing in the Grand National, 2023 at Aintree, Scotland. It was an 80-1 outsider trained by Sandy Thomson and ridden by jockey Ryan Mania. The rider and horse suffered a fall at the first fence and the horse was immediately attended to by vets, yet, it could not be saved.

The part owner of Hill Sixteen, Jimmy Fyffe, has confirmed its death in the winner’s enclosure after one of his horses, Florida Dreams, trained by Nicky Richards, won the Grade 2 bumper race. Offering condolences the Jockey Club spokesperson said “ Sadly, while racing in the Grand National, Hill Sixteen sustained an unrecoverable injury. Our sincere sympathies are with connections.”

Hill Sixteen isn’t the first to lose its life at the Grand National. Earlier two horses named Eclair Surf and Discorama lost their lives in the event in 2022. Long Mile suffered the same fate in 2021 and Up for Review in 2019, making Hill Sixteen fifth to die while racing for the event. To add to the misery, Dark Raven passed away on the same day as Hill Sixteen, after a fall in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle.

The comments on the post were filled with anguish. Many commenters were for a ban on such sports that are leading to the loss of such beautiful creatures. A horrified animal lover commented “ Heartbreaking for beautiful creatures. It should be banned and cruel, broke my heart out to beautiful horse is 10 years old.” Another user reflecting on their dislike for Equestrian sports said, “ And that is why I don’t like any kind of animal racing, it’s all for people’s pleasure!” 

Needless deaths of such beautiful creatures” sighed a viewer expressing grief over the death of Hill Sixteen. Offering condolences to the departed another user says,” RIP Hill Sixteen, it’s just heartbreaking.” A series of comments opined for a ban of such sports, “ It’s about time this age-old sport was put to bed”, “Should be banned! Absolutely awful”, and “Ban all horse racing, so sad.”
