“Bloody Ridiculous”: Controversial Rule at Iconic Festival Leaves Equestrian World Divided

The growing popularity of equestrian sports is threatened after the chief administration, British Horse Racing (BHA) implemented a new set of rules in the sport. However, just like every other game, its evolution stands inevitable. With the new norms and guidelines interfering with the jockeys’ accustomed practices, the Cheltenham Festival athletes condemned the step. 

In an article by The Sun, published today, the changes in rules and their associated controversies in the festival were addressed. The rule amendments primarily encircled the whip-usage criteria of the sport. Let’s take a look at the revisions and how the jockeys are taking it. 

Cheltenham Festival fell victim to BHA’s stance on whip-usage

According to The Sun, bans on athletes as a penalty for breach of the new rules are already on their way. Lorcan Williams was banned for 18 days, and out of the four-day racing event. Moreover, an overwhelming list of changes was made, the major ones being the limited number of whip usages. A prominent jockey, Harry Cobden pointed at the revisions as “bloody ridiculous.”

Reportedly, after a board meeting took place, the authorities have shed light on the persistent issue of over usage of whips. The total number of uses was reduced to 6 times in Flat Races and 7 times in Jump Races. The athletes are not very content with the realities of it resulting in a tumultuous situation for the sport. Furthermore, Irish trainer, Aidan O’Brien hinted that this step could mark “The beginning of the end for English racing.”

Significantly, the new rules are already in effect for Jump Races and shall apply to all races, regardless of categories, over time. Likewise, the BHA didn’t ease out on penalties, going up to double suspensions. A four-day ban for one strike over the limit was etched in the list while a 7-days ban for two strikes. In addition, a fine ranging from 200 pounds to 10,000 pounds shall also be levied.

There is a high possibility that these amendments shall be incorporated into the Olympic Games eventually. Therefore, it is only viable for the athletes to be ready with a new winning strategy.
