Simone Biles has a trick named after her

It’s not an everyday thing that a move in one’s sport gets named after them. Dutch soccer genius, Johan Cruyff, has the famous ‘Cruyff Turn’ named after him. Babe Ruth gave way to the term ‘Ruthian.’ Similarly, Simone has a trick named after her called, ‘The Biles’ (double layout with ½ turn), and it has a painfully curious origin.

Talking about the same in a video, Simone said, “We made it up out of almost an injury. I partially tore my calf muscle one time, attempting an extra half twist than my skill is. And then my coach was like, ‘maybe if you do a half twist, nobody’s ever done that before, and it’ll take the stress of that landing off your calf.'”

Biles said that’s when they started playing around with the idea of adding a half twist before her landing. She also told about getting a trick named after somebody. “There’s a whole process to doing a skill and getting it named after you.” She said one has to be the first to do the trick successfully.

Adding to her statement, Simone said if two people try out the same trick, it is based on who did the trick better and has the higher score. Biles mentioned so because it had happened before. She also said they made her trick up from an injury standpoint and taking the pressure off of it.

Not the only trick named after Biles

At 25, one can only accomplish so much in life. But for Biles, the sky is the limit. She has won championships and Olympic titles and has become an advocate for the mental health of fellow athletes. And she has multiple tricks named after her. Apart from ‘The Biles,’ Simone has a few more tricks that take her name.

The Biles 2 – It’s a floor exercise that includes a triple-twisting double back tucked somersault.
