Bruce Lee is one of the most influential and admired martial artists. Although he is undoubtedly praised as a legendary martial artist, his fighting skills have always been an enormous question. Most people do not see him as a fighter and claim to beat him if they ever fought. Similarly, when Quentin Tarantino’s directorial ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ portrayed Bruce Lee as getting thrashed by a stuntman played by Brad Pitt, it became a huge point of debate and controversy.

In 2019, when Leonardo DiCaprio was asked a question about the movie and the Spahn Ranch scene, he revealed his views on the topic.

The fight scene between Bruce Lee and Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood created a lot of controversies. In the fight scene, Bruce Lee got thrashed by Brad Pitt’s character, who is a stuntman in the movie. Bruce Lee’s admirers didn’t like it at all. Whereas, while talking with Deadline, Leonardo DiCaprio revealed his views on the fight scene and the brilliance of Brad Pitt’s talent.

The interviewer asked, “Spahn Ranch, the fight with Bruce Lee. When you saw his performance in that movie what most surprised you? The Spahn Ranch scene with the Manson clan was…creepy and atmospheric.” Di Caprio replied, “Yeah, that’s what is so interesting about what Quentin does, with the fairytale aspect of this story and how he did that with Inglourious Basterds.”

He continued, “But he again integrated in this almost forensic way, he looked at the murders that night and set it up in a way that is just so chilling all the way from Spahn Ranch to that house, but back to Brad. We were doing two completely different films, and then we got to merge together. What I was so impressed with about Brad’s performance was it is a very particular craft and skill to be able to do that kind of completely contained quite cool, Alain Delon or Steve McQueen, and hold the screen like that. I was like, holy sh*t. It was so incredibly impressive what he was able to do with that character. We had our own dynamic on set, but watching the movie, I was like, wow.”

Everyone except Quentin Tarantino was hesitant about the scene

It is not just the audience, even the stunt director, and the actor, Brad Pitt himself was hesitant about the scene. While talking with The Huffington Post, Robert Alonzo revealed the situation on the set of the movie. He disclosed that Brad Pitt and the entire crew on set were feeling uneasy about the scene.

Brad didn’t want to do the scene and beat his childhood idol. Henceforth, he told Tarantino, “It’s Bruce Lee, man!” Moreover, Alonzo recalled, “I know that Brad had expressed his concerns, and we all had concerns about Bruce losing.” However, the scene took place, and as expected, it became a controversy.
