“You Called Yourself the Dragon’s Mentor”: Bruce Lee Once Lashed Out at ‘The Million Dollar Director’ for Trying to Teach Him Fighting Skills

The martial art legend, Bruce Lee, is regarded not only for his fighting talents but also for his flair in acting. He is well-known for merging eastern and western cinemas together. Lee did some exceptional movies in his career. Whether it is The Big Boss or Enter the Dragon, he did a commendable job of making those films a super hit.
The reason for the widespread popularity of Lee’s films is their fighting sequences. Interestingly, Lee is the sole owner of all the sequences, as he himself crafted all the moves involved in the fight. However, once The Big Boss movie director took credit for the fight scenes, which made Lee angry.

Bruce Lee got angry with his director
In the book, Bruce Lee: a life, Matthew Polly wrote about an incident that left Lee fuming. As per the book, after the huge success of The Big Boss, its Million Dollar director, Lo Wei, credited all the fight sequences to his own name. “He also told reporters he taught Bruce how to fight in front of the camera”, wrote Polly.

Furthermore, after reading Lo Wei’s statement in the newspaper, vexed Lee stormed into the sets to reproach the director. Explaining this, Matthew penned“ “You called yourself ‘The Dragon’s mentor’” Bruce yelled, shaking his head in fury”. However, Lo Wei refused to accept those accusations by saying, “The quote was out of context. I only said, I showed you how to fight for the cameras”.

Based on Matthew’s log, Bruce Lee didn’t entertain Lo Wei’s explanation and it further made Lee furious. The entire cast and crew present on the set witnessed the whole incident. Also, among those present on the set was the young stuntman named Jackie Chan.

Bruce Lee’s fighting Sequences
Bruce Lee was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts technique. This technique later paved the way for mixed martial arts, popularly known as MMA. Likewise, Lee performed his own fight sequences in each of his films. Martial arts fans still watch most of those fighting scenes worldwide.
Clearly, Lee had his own unique way of performing his beloved sport of martial arts. And, the fighting prompts that he created will always be remembered in the golden pages of history.
