The MLB may be in lockout but that doesn’t at all mean there is any lack of action. The negotiations so far may have been tense and carried on for far longer than any baseball fan would’ve liked. But it seems as though things may finally be coming to a head. With ultimatums being presented from the league’s side, Max Scherzer stands to lose out on quite a bit.

Max Scherzer, having recently agreed to a new contract with the New York Mets, was one of the key free agents this off-season. However, having agreed on a move prior to the lockout, it seems as though he is one of the few not waiting with bated breath for the season to resume. But being a representative of the MLB Players Association has some dangerous fallouts. With the league possibly indicating that his bumper contract may stand partially in question contingent on the negotiations.

The League has recently made clear that if no new Collective Bargaining Agreement is arrived at prior to the deadline set by the league then there are some pretty stringent conditions to go with it.

The extension of the lockout over the February 28th deadline could have some potentially disastrous consequences for both sides. The league has stated that if there is no agreement, then regular-season games potentially stand to be canceled.

And if games are canceled then the league will recoup the player’s pay for that specific game and neither will the games be rescheduled. Effectively, this would mean that the players lose out on their game-day earnings; especially if no agreement is arrived at by the deadline prescribed by the league. Specifically, for Max Scherzer though, this may hurt just a little bit more.

According to a recent survey, Scherzer stands among the top players to lose out on quite some substantial amounts if game days are missed.

And while there are other players on the list too, the league seems to have taken aim carefully. Scherzer is a big part of the representations made by the players’ association and this could well be a tactic by the League. And while Scherzer is affected by the payday, the League will be losing broadcast revenue from the games too.
