“It Brought Tears to Her Eyes”: Jackie Chan’s Gift to His Mother Worth a ‘Few Thousand’ Made Her Emotional Once

Jackie Chan is a master of all trades. From martial arts to acting to directing to singing, the man has perfected each aspect of his life by now. Not only has he earned fame, but he has earned a lot of cheddar as well. However, the same was not true always. Starting out, Chan’s life was complicated and difficult.

When he was trying to make a place for himself in the acting industry, he struggled with funds. In addition to that, he also stayed far away from his family and could not count on their emotional support as well. But in those little moments that Chan did get to spend with them, he made sure he did his best to make them happy.

Chan has surely seen numerous struggles in his life. There was a point when he did not even have money to come visit his parents. While he did not have the means, he still aimed to make them proud of the man he was becoming. While coming to visit home, Chan bought a gift for his parents. The gift made his mother emotional that she couldn’t hold back her tears. Chan recalls, “When I gave Mom the watch, it brought tears to her eyes.”

When Jackie Chan was struggling to get acting gigs in Hong Kong, a dry spell forced him to retreat to Australia where his parents lives. Soon after, Chan went back to his home in Hong Kong and counted his savings. He then realized that he did not have enough for plane tickets. In his autobiography, ‘Never Grow Up’, Chan described the situation saying, “The agony really hit home when I counted my savings and realized I didn’t even have enough cash for a plane ticket!” Jackie Chan was stuck between a rock and a hard place. However, his first girlfriend, Chang, came to his rescue.

In his autobiography, Chan revealed, “An angel appeared in the form of my first girlfriend, Chang. She’d heard about my troubles and stuffed $20,000 Hong Kong dollars into my hand.” The amount was a big one, therefore, Chan tried to refuse the gift she was giving him. But she insisted he take the money and pay her back when he started earning again. Her benevolence ensured that Jackie Chan could bring a smile to his parent’s faces.

Chan spent a few thousand dollars from the money to buy some stylish watches for his parents. He then left Hong Kong, even though he didn’t want to. His reluctance stemmed from his struggles and his lack of success. He also felt terrible about the hefty loan he took from his girlfriend. Jackie Chan’s only reprieve at that time was that he would soon be reunited with his family.

As Chan reached home, he handed over the gifts to his parents. Chan recalled the moment, “This was my first present to her.” While his mom got emotional and cried, his father was also spellbound by the gifts. Chan revealed, “Dad fetched a piece of cloth and wouldn’t stop polishing his watch. I knew they were both very happy to see me and be a family again.”
