In his biography, Never Grow Up, the actor once revealed how prejudiced and biased the media was towards him. He regretted the media not utilizing its potential for good causes. While he strived to spotlight the lives and sufferings of the underprivileged, the focus remained on his personal life and gossip.

According to the book, despite the 68-year-old star’s grand efforts to help the needy, he often felt helpless himself. He was utterly passionate about donating and encouraged his wealthy friends to do the same. And they did. However, the media’s antics often dispirited him. “celebrity gossip always takes up much more space than anything about charity,” he said.

Furthermore, Chan revealed that at times when he took the opportunity to promote his charity, the media would tag it as “boring” or “just for show.” Thus, he had “to beg people to care about those in need,” every time he launched a new foundation for the cause. The icon wondered how things would turn out if the media would prioritize crucial issues. “Money isn’t important, but doing and leaving something good behind in the world is,” the Rush Hour actor stated.

Moreover, he added, “I really wish the media would spend more energy on concern for others, on poor, remote areas, on regions with unfavorable living environments.” Chan confessed that during times of controversies and scandals, the media wouldn’t leave his side calling for interviews, but when for charity, no one batted an eye. Similarly, he once made a heart-wrenching confession about the poor children’s reality.

Talking to Look To The Stars in 2007, the actor shared his aspiration to minimize the suffering of underprivileged children in the world. When asked about the greatest challenge to exist in the world, he promptly replied, “The suffering of children. There is just no problem that is bigger than that.”

Regardless of his busy work schedule, Chan always managed to squeeze in time for charity. His humanitarian efforts are noteworthy. He serves as a UNICEF ambassador since he rose to fame and has also established the ‘Build A School For A Dollar’ campaign. “When you see children hungry or sick, your heart just breaks. I have never seen anything worse in my whole life,” he claimed.
