The greatness the world was soon to be graced by, was hinted at Jackie Chan’s birth. The martial arts legend was born unusually big and heavy. A massive twelve pounds. However, the Chan family almost gave up their kid because of monetary troubles. As his autobiographical, Never Grow Up, once revealed, Chan’s parents couldn’t afford a cesarean surgery and were on the edge of considering a peculiar offer.

Owing to his hefty size, the surgery was the only way possible to bring him into the world. Therefore, aware of his parents’ worries, the doctor offered them a resolution. She proposed to take the baby in return for free treatment and an additional sum. Here’s what followed.

Jackie Chan’s parents almost gave him up for adoption

The 68-year-old star was born in Hong Kong in April 1954. While in his mom’s belly, his personality remained stubborn, as he posed as a troublesome kid already. Apparently, he gave his mother a tough time, kicking around. Soon after the birth pangs took over, his mother was rushed to the hospital only to discover that she’d have to undergo cesarean surgery. Baffled, his parents were clueless about covering the costs.

Hence, the doctor came to their rescue. Since she had no kids but desired to have one and offered $500 along with a no-cost treatment; in return for the newborn. “That was a lot of money, and my dad actually considered her offer for a split second,” the book, Never Grow Up, stated. Luckily, Chan’s parents didn’t comply with her. They feared that they might be unable to bear another child again.

Chan was their first child, and probably the heaviest kid in town. The news was reported by the local media making headlines, “Giant Baby.” It stunned everyone. This is where Chan derived his adorable nickname from his parents, Cannonball. Furthermore, their debt troubles were cleared out by family friends. “A twelve-pound baby! This kid might end up doing something spectacular!,” they said. Rest is history.

As per the sources, the Karate Kid icon was overwhelmed with joy after his son, Jaycee Chan was born. He hardly worried about his appearance. However, he made sure to check if he was a healthy baby. He did so, by checking his bone structure. Jaycee was a double-boned baby, just like his father.

Thus, after assessing his son’s thick bones, Chan was delighted. “I took one look and saw that my son was double-boned, too, which pleased me to no end,” the book stated. The actor cried happy tears along with his manager.
