The 2023 NHL trade was an exciting one with several players were traded and acquired. Speculations were multitudinous and many trades made headlines—some considered to be the worst and some, the best. Some trades, such as the Patrick Kane trade had people cheering with excitement. It seems like the teams have not yet had their fill of acquiring players. Recently, the Coyotes acquired Steven Kampfer from the Red Wings.

The Arizona Coyotes acquired the defenseman from the Detroit Red Wings in a post-deadline trade. The deadline for 2023 NHL trades ended on March 3. However, the AHL trade deadline is on March 10, and apparently, Kampfer has been traded for the AHL.

Defenseman Steven Kampfer gets traded to the Coyotes for future considerations

According to Bruins Insider, the 34-year-old defenseman will report to Tucson of the American Hockey League. His trade was announced on Thursday. Steven Kampfer played 20 games for the Boston Bruins in the 2020-21 season, post which he has not made an appearance in the National Hockey League. However, he has continued to play in the American Hockey League.

The former Bruins star has played 44 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League this season. During these games, he had 4 goals and 18 assists. He also recorded 26 penalty minutes. In the NHL, he had 231 career games. In these games, he had 15 goals and 24 assists, and 100 penalty minutes. Kampfer has played with teams such as the Boston Bruins, the Minnesota Wild, the Florida Panthers, and the New York Rangers.

In the AHL, he has played with teams such as the Providence Bruins, Houston Aeros, Iowa Wild, San Antonio Rampage, Hartford Wolf Pack, and Griffins. He has played a total of 318 matches in the NHL and has scored 35 goals and given 106 assists, along with 237 penalty minutes.

Tracing Kampfer’s career

Steven Kampfer’s career in NHL began when he was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the year 2007 in the fourth round of the entry draft. The defenseman hails from Michigan, and before starting his professional hockey career, he spent four seasons playing at the University of Michigan. The 5’ 11”, 198-lb defenseman signed up with the Red Wings on a one-year contract on May 22, 2022. Kampfer got the contract after he tallied 11 goals and 19 assists for a total of 30 points, in addition to 49 penalty minutes.

Kampfer did this with Ak Bars Kazan in the Kontinental Hockey League during the campaign in 2021-22. During his amateur career, from 2006-10, he gained 60 points with 7 goals and 53 assists along with 134 penalty minutes. This earned him a plus-65 in 147 games. Now, after the current trade, even though he is going to report to the Arizona Coyotes, he is going to play for the Tuscon Roadrunners in the American Hockey League.
