Oftentimes, statements can carry multiple connotations and give rise to hilarious goof-ups. In one such instance, skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin witnessed her words get lost in translation. While she addressed a menses update after winning the World Cup title in Italy, an Austrian media outlet understood things differently.

Shiffrin posted a video on her Instagram account while sharing the hilarious goof-up made by ORF Austria. The video featured an interview post-competition, where the star skier mentioned that she got her period. However, instead of thinking menstrual cycle, the media broadcaster thought of something else. What was the misunderstanding, and how did fans react? Let’s take a look.

Mikaela Shiffrin stuck in a tale of cycles

Post-competition, Shiffrin spoke about her experience and how despite winning the title, she faced a setback. The star had crossed veteran skier Lindsey Vonn’s record of 85 world cup titles. Yet, she candidly explained the added challenge to one of the most tournaments in her professional career—her monthly cycle. “I’m kind of in an unfortunate time of my monthly cycle…” she laughed as she talked about plans for upcoming competitions.

However, the Austrian broadcasting outlet Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) translated that to a bicycle. So, to invoke some laughter, Shiffrin played along and attached a video of her cycling while the song Bicycle Race by the band Queen played in the background. Fans had some hilarious reactions, ranging from “Thanks for normalising cycles!” to “She is a national treasure”. Even Adidas Women’s social media account commented on the post, saying “we love it”.

Fans also called out the broadcaster with comments like “I was so mad at first because I thought they were being awkward about you talking about your period but I think they didn’t understand the English” and “that’s ORF translation at it’s best!!! and yes, thanks for talking about it and how our periods can influence physical performance!”

Hilarious goof-ups aside, Mikaela Shiffrin has created history by surpassing Lindsey Vonn’s record. Now, the star aims to cross Swedish alpine ski racer Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 titles. Yet, the star believes that there’s more in store than just crossing world cup title records. In 2022, in a chat with Forbes, the star skier said, “I’m almost on a journey to find out what the goal needs to be and what my career is going to look like moving forward”. And while she acknowledged her immensely successful career, she couldn’t wait to dig deeper.
