On the Rettenbach Glacier near Sölden in Austria, Alpine skiing history is unfolding. The SÖLDEN FIS WORLD CUP, also called the Audi FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup 2023/24, is currently underway and is turning out to be a thrilling spectacle.

The first run saw an epic showdown, with the top skiers in the world vying for the top spot from Mikaela Shiffrin, Petra Vlhová, Federica Brignone, and others.  However, in the thrilling showdown, an unfortunate accident occurred that almost derailed the two-time Olympic downhill medalist who secured gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Sofia Goggia, the Italian Alpine ski racer.

A post on X by a handle called Eurosport France read, “Avec Sofia Goggia, on peut s’attendre à tout”… sauf peut-être à la voir s’arrêter au bout 10 secondes à cause d’un technicien resté sur la piste. Plus de peur que de mal, et l’Italienne a finalement réussi à se qualifier. RDV à 13h sur Eurosport #ChaletClub

The translation stated, “With Sofia Goggia, we can expect anything”… except perhaps seeing her stop after 10 seconds because of a technician remaining on the track. More fear than harm, and the Italian finally managed to qualify. Meet at 1 p.m. on Eurosport #ChaletClub. In the video, Goggia was seen swooshing down the giant at high speeds, and she suddenly spotted a man shoveling ice by the flag. Thankfully, she swerved to the side with the utmost precision right on time, or it would have led to serious consequences for both people. Further tweets also highlighted the details of the almost freak accident that derailed her.

A post on X by a  handle called Łukasz Jachimiak read, “Niewiele brakowało, a Sofia Goggia staranowałaby tego pana z łopatą. Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel po pierwszym przejeździe giganta w #Soelden pewnie zostanie na 17. miejscu. Drugi przejazd od godziny 13.00.”

Despite this almost freak accident, the first run at the Audi FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup 2023/24 ended in a surprising turn of events.
