In the equestrian world, some horses are legends like no other. One such horse is the iconic “Forte.” He is the son of “Sire Violence” and was born to Queen Caroline, a mare with a record of multiple stakes victories. Just a year ago, at the age of 2, he took the equestrian world by storm and claimed victory in prestigious races such as the Grade I Hopeful Stakes, Breeders’ Futurity, and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Then this year, he continued to shine at the age of 3, winning the Florida Derby and even the Jim Dandy Stakes. He was set to make an appearance at the Breeder’s Cup Classic this year as well. However, a heartbreaking update revealed that he has developed a quarter crack in his left front foot while training.

Trying to be positive, trainer Todd Pletcher still continued to prepare for the Breeder’s Cup. But on the 19th of October this year, Forte’s owner, Mike Repole, announced the unfortunate news that Forte would be retiring from racing.  The decision came after issues with the persistent hoof crack that the horse developed after his performance in the Travers Stakes. Forte concluded his racing career with earnings totaling a whopping $3,029,830. And now the retired equestrian champion Forte has arrived at Spendthrift Farm, standing tall for $50,000.

A new journey for the equestrian champion Forte

According to the Paulick Report, Forte has found a new home at Spendthrift Farm. Here, he will take up stud duty in 2024.  The introductory fee for breeders seeking to access Forte’s exceptional bloodline is set at $50,000, a reflection of his outstanding lineage and dominance on the track.  Breeders who wish to experience the majesty of Forte firsthand can schedule an appointment for inspection.

Ned Toffey, Spendthrift’s general manager, shared, “The first thing I think about Forte is just how much of an honor it is for us to bring a horse like him to Spendthrift”.  Ned Toffey also acknowledged Forte as the fifth champion to grace their stallion ranks since 2020. This, in itself, pays tribute to the legacy that founder B. Wayne Hughes established and the dedication now carried forward by Eric and Tammy Gustavson.

A legend of a kind

Forte will join the ranks of legendary horses like Seattle Slew, Affirmed, and Lord Avie. Vinnie Viola of St. Elias Stable expressed his gratitude and excitement, recognizing Forte’s brilliance and the partnership with Mike Repole, his owner, over the years, saying, “Forte is, without a doubt, a special horse”.

Todd Pletcher, Forte’s trainer, also offered insights into Forte’s exceptional character and stated how “Forte exuded class in everything he did”. He also said how many might not understand the extraordinary talent the thoroughbred had with all the challenges faced the past year. However, he shared that “horses like Forte are rare, and his absence in the barn will be deeply felt”.
