While equestrian sports are enjoyed by spectators throughout the globe, not everyone is in favor of them. This is not surprising, considering the fact that over the years, an astronomical number of horses have breathed their last on the racetrack, mostly due to injuries related to the sport. Recently, the Wyoming Downs Track saw 3 innocent horses being euthanized during the race.

The Royal Ascot meeting is underway and a piece of similar news has come out of there. In a tragic occurrence, the last day of the Royal Ascot race was marred by the unfortunate death of a horse, who allegedly died due to fatal injuries. This death has sparked rage among the equestrian community, with several calling for the ban of horse racing altogether.

On June 24, PETA UK broke the gut-wrenching news on their official Facebook page. Horse Canute, a participant in the Golden Gates Stakes, died a painful and untimely death after breaking one of its hind legs during the race. According to the Mirror, before the race started, Canute was the 9-2 co-favorite. However, he had to be pulled to the side during the race by his jockey Ryan Moore when he suffered the fatal injury.

While they started out strong, Moore soon realized there was some problem with his mount. Therefore, he started to ease the horse to the side, thus causing minor interference for many horses. The veterinarians rushed to the 3-year-old horse to treat him, however, the horse could not be saved. An equally tragic incident occurred at Wyoming Downs Track on Saturday, June 17. Three horses fell during three out of the first five races that were being held at the track. According to the Wyoming Gaming Commission, the injured horses were humanely euthanized.

The authorities described the event as a rare occurrence and revealed that all the horses that died during the races were 2-year-old quarter horses from Utah running in the Utah Bred Futurity Trials. This is not the first, and probably not the last, time that a horse has met a horrific death at the racecourse, as Churchill Downs also saw several deaths during the famed Kentucky Derby. The continuous brutal injuries and terrible deaths of these equine creatures have prompted the community to speak out against horse racing.

Lamenting at the cruel treatment of the horses, another commentator disparaged the practice of horse racing, and said, “Not another Horse so heartbreaking poor baby. Time this cruel sport is abolished its disgusting so many Horses dying.” Another fan wrote, “This is a cruel sport but won’t stop due to greed nomatter how many times people comment everytime it kills a horse its a sad way to go poor horses shouldn’t be trained for this just a money making machine because they can run”. Indeed, horseracing is an iconic and entertaining sport, but it is clear that the non-stop abuse it pits horses through has given it a negative reputation among horse lovers.
