Simone Biles was already a preeminent legend and has been a constant fixture in the firmament of gymnastics, but 2023 saw her become the best. She made modern-day history both on the national and international stage. She surpassed innumerable historical records and icons, like Linda Metheny Mulvihill, Larisa Latynina, and Vitaly Scherbo.

And now, fast forward to the end of the iconic year. After winning three times the coveted honour of AP Female Athlete of the Year, she also added another prestige French publication’s Champion of Champions honor to her list of honors for 2023 and we doff our hats to her.

In an Instagram post by the prestigious French publication L’Équipe, Simone Biles was named the Champion of Champions in 2023. The caption of the post read, “Simone Biles est sacrée Championne des championnes 2023.” Which translates to “Simone Biles is the pure Champion of Champions 2023.” The post further highlighted how she became a quadruple world champion” in 2023, having clinched team, individual all-around, floor, and balance beam gold at Antwerp, Belgium, and having 23 world titles to her name.

It is important to note that this is not the first but the fourth time Biles has won the prestigious Champion of Champions 2023 honor from L’Équipe, having won the title in 2016, 2018, and 2019 as well. This well-deserved honor bestowed upon the queen comes as another epic level unlocked on her list in 2023. And is a few of many.

Simone Biles’ 2023 crowning glory

Simone Biles’ crowning achievement in 2023 began at the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, where she became the oldest woman ever to win the U.S. Gymnastics Championships All-Around title at 26 years and 166 days old. She surpassed the iconic Linda Metheny Mulvihill, who was 24 and 100 days old in 1971 when she won the honor. Apart from this, Biles also tied with Japan’s legend Kōhei Uchimura when she clinched her 6th All-Around title at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

If that wasn’t enough, seven-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles also surpassed the legendary Vitaly Scherbo for the most medals by any gymnast, male or female, in World Championship history with a staggering 34 medals. To top it all off, she also placed ahead of the iconic Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who previously held the title of most decorated gymnast ever with 32 World Championship and Olympic medals combined.

Simone Biles marked an iconic comeback that was the talk of 2023, and she matched the talk by clinching accolade after accolade. Her recent honor was fitting, as she is truly the 2023 Champion of Champions.
