The year 2023 has been a massive year for gymnastics queen Simone Biles, both personally and professionally. Staging a remarkable comeback at the age of 26, Biles made modern-day history by becoming the most decorated gymnast ever. However, despite winning all the major competitions this year on a national and international level, Biles seemed to be surpassed in another significant area.

The “Top 15 Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2023“ by Sportico was just released, and on the list, seven-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles trailed in comparison to athletes like tennis champion Coco Gauff.

In a post on X, Heath Thorpe, the Australian gymnast, pointed out the saddening reality of Simone Biles’ earnings from her salary and winnings on the “Top 15 Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2023” list by Sportico. Heath Thrope wrote, “It is wild to me that you can be as successful as Simone Biles in gymnastics and earn essentially ZERO dollars from prize money.”

While most athletes on the list seemed to earn a significant amount with their sports, Simone Biles, the most accomplished gymnast in the world, displayed nearly $0 in the salary and winnings category. Whereas athletes like Coco Gauff earned between 5 and 10 million dollars in their sport by prize money alone.

According to Sportico’s “Top 15 Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2023 Earnings Breakdown,” Coco Gauff, the six-time WTA Tour winner who won the 2023 US Open, surpassed legends like Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, and Naomi Osaka this year to claim the title of highest-paid female athlete. With nearly $6.7 million in salary and winnings and $16 million earned through endorsements, she surpassed names like Simone Biles, Iga Świątek, and Eileen Gu.

The 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics All-Around Champion, Simone Biles, on the other hand, came in at Number 9 with estimated earnings of $8.5 million in endorsements thanks to lucrative partnerships with brands such as Athleta, Spieth America, Powerade, Wheaties, GK Elite, Nulo, Axonius, and MasterClass.
