However, recently, Connor McDavid, from his maiden team, Edmonton Oilers, became the first player after Wayne to achieve a rare feat in the 2022-23 season.

Is he better than The Great Gretzky?
Comparisons are quite obvious when you achieve a feat, which was set by a legend. And Connor McDavid has scored more than 50 points in the 2022-23 NHL season, with games still to be played. Before him, this achievement was only attained by Wayne Gretzky for the Oilers in the 1988-89 NHL season.

When the NHL fans saw the stats, they couldn’t stop comparing the 25-year-old young Oilers’ center to the NHL legend. However, the reactions were pretty contrasting. On one hand, a few people rated him higher than Gretzky. Whereas, few people contradicted this thought and reacted otherwise.

If he played then, he wouldn't have the same training, equipment, diet…etc that he has had up to now; no 2-line passes; no OT until '83ish (and was 5 on 5 when it came in); more holding etc.
He'd have skill, and would be top 5 player, but doubtful he'd get 200+ points.
