“Strange Dichotomy of Fanbases”: Tony Hawk Recalled the Weirdest Halfpipe Setup at Arena Football Game in 2021

Vertical skateboarding pioneer Tony Hawk once had the opportunity to demonstrate his skills in a unique arena. While discussing his most challenging and interesting demos, he spoke to Slam City Skates in 2021 about skating in ‘Arena Football’. He also opened up about demonstrating his skills to an audience that mostly comprised children.

Nicknamed the Birdman, the 54-year-old retired skateboarder spoke about doing a demo in Louisville, Kentucky. He talked about the impressive incident in a pleasant and candid tone while also explaining the nitty-grits of the hybrid sport.

Tony Hawk once had a unique mix of fans as his audience

“Well, I think one of the most challenging and interesting demos we ever did was… Do you know what Arena Football is?” Tony asked his interviewer. The skateboarder was in Kentucky to try out a new ramp called the Hack Jam Ramp. He explains Arena Football as a confined walled-up version of American football. He said that assembling the ramp took the crew roughly 45 minutes.

“It’s American Football, but it’s in an arena so there are walls. You don’t go out-of-bounds, you’re always in-bounds,” explained Tony to his readers. He also noted how he had a curious mix of fans in his audience.

“All these kids that came to the Arena Football game that really had no interest in the Arena Football game, they really just wanted to come and see our demo,” Hawk reminisced about his unique experience. “It was such a strange dichotomy of fanbases. Haha!” he added.
