While many have lost their lives to the deadly predators, some have survived these accidents. 33-year-old surfer Bethany Hamilton’s shark attack incident is one of the most famous and inspiring stories in the sports world. The Hawaiian surfer was just 13 when she experienced a career-threatening encounter with a massive tiger shark that took away her left arm.

On May 12, the popular surfing page, The Surfing Mafia, rekindled the horrific incident of Hamilton’s shark attack. It intended to pay tribute to her resilience in fighting back the odds in her life, and finding a purpose to live once again. The surfing page shared an inspiring picture of Bethany Hamilton posing alongside her surfboard without her left arm. The spine-chilling picture radiated inspiration to bounce back no matter what life throws at us with the caption, “we’re all able to navigate confidently through life’s ups and downs.”

At 13, when Bethany Hamilton lost her left arm, she showed impeccable courage by returning to the beach with her surfboard within a month of her recovery. Nevertheless, she continued following surfing as a professional. Hamilton won the NSSA National Competition in Australia two times in a row in 2004 and 2005. Since then, she has participated in at least one surfing contest each year.

Moreover, in an interview with Fare Game, when Hamilton was asked about how she gained the courage to follow her dreams, she gave a beautiful explanation. She told that she did not think about her accident much. In fact, she did not even cry when she lost her arm. At 13 years of age, Hamilton knew that things will be alright for her.
