“Bothering Him- Including Police”: Michael Phelps’ Fans Breached Court’s Decorum After Seeing The Swimming Legend on Jury Duty in 2012

The fame and popularity of legendary swimmer, Michael Phelps, is evident from his legacy. He is the most decorated Olympian of all time. Likewise, the 28 medals he possesses are the highest for anyone. However, there was an incident which took a toll because of the popularity of this great Olympian.

In 2012, Phelps went to Baltimore Circuit Court for the celebrity edition. And what happened there next was proof of his stardom.

Michael Phelps had to move to the “quiet room”

In 2012, Phelps was already the greatest swimmer that the swimming arena had ever seen. He already had 22 Olympics medals, and won the other six in the 2016 Rio Olympics. The popularity of the legend was unmatched. Moreover, when his fans saw him in the courthouse, they couldn’t resist throwing themselves at him.

According to Maj. Sam Cogen, “People were using their cell phones [to take pictures], bothering him — including police”. Everyone present there was trying to get near Phelps and take a picture with him. Watching the people going out of control for the pictures, Phelps was moved to the “quiet room”.

Cogen further added, “Phelps’ presence created such a buzz that other prospective jurors and employees throughout the courthouse started streaming in to take his picture”

Announcements were made to control people

People and employees broke many of the court’s conduct that day. The situation came to a point where the authorities had to intervene and announce to maintain the decorum of the courthouse. Moreover, “Both Michael Phelps and Duff Goldman had their numbers picked for the jury pool at the downtown courthouse”.

Picking the numbers of the Duty Jury, crowding to take pictures with them, all these were contempt of the courthouse conduct. The responsible authority tried to take them under control as soon as possible. However, Phelps had headphones on and largely kept to himself during all this.

It is never easy for a celebrity to go to public places. It was just one of the incidents where fans overcrowded Phelps and showed their love towards the G.O.A.T. swimmer. However, Phelps got out of the room without giving rise to any further problems. Moreover, it was nice of Phelps that he did not panic in such a situation and reacted calmly to the crowd.
