She won individual gold medals in the 50, 100, and 200-meter backstroke, leaving her rivals in her wake. She also aided the Australian team in winning silver in the women’s and mixed medley relays. Amid her extraordinary achievements, McKeown remained humble and attributed her success to her teammates, “As proud as I am, I feel like I have should share that (award) with my teammates.” She continued, “I never thought in a million years I would be named Swimmer of the Year but it’s pretty cool.” In addition to Kaylee McKeown’s outstanding accomplishments the Championships featured a wide range of gifted female swimmers who made her competition massive.

Other outstanding female swimmers also left their mark on the competition. Another Australian sensation, Mollie O’Callaghan, made history by winning both the 100- and 200-meter freestyle competitions, stunning the swimming world. In the long-distance freestyle competitions, Katie Ledecky of the United States displayed her unwavering superiority. She further cemented her reputation as one of the best swimmers of all time with her impressive victories in the 800- and 1500-meter freestyle events. Summer McIntosh of Canada, who is only 16 years old, demonstrated her potential to become a future star with victories in the 200-meter fly and 400-meter individual medley events, as well as her record-breaking swimming.

Zhang Yufei of China won a gold medal in the 50-meter butterfly and went on to become the undisputed 100-meter butterfly champion. With her versatility in the 200-meter individual medley, 100-meter freestyle, and 200-meter breaststroke events, American Kate Douglass established herself as one of the best female swimmers. Another outstanding athlete, Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, was recognized as one of the best in her field for her performances and world-record-breaking swims in the 100- and 50-meter breaststroke.
