As the countdown to the Paris Olympics 2024 glory ticks down to a mere 111 days, the swimming world’s attention turns to the pool, where one name is making a splash: Noè Ponti. Three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics, swimming phenom Caeleb Dressel of the United States showcased his dominance by rewriting the world record in the same event, clinching gold with a lightning-fast time of 49.45 seconds. Meanwhile, Ponti, then a rising star, made his Olympic debut, clinching bronze behind Dressel and Kristof Milak. Now firmly established as a prominent figure in the pool, Ponti sets his sights on a second shot at Olympic glory, with his recent achievements at the 2024 Swiss Championships in Uster serving as proof of his burgeoning potential.

On April 6, 2024, Ponti dazzled the swimming world by smashing his own record in the 100-meter butterfly prelims, clocking an impressive 50.16 seconds, eclipsing his previous Swiss record set during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Noè Ponti’s surge to the top

Noè Ponti has demonstrated his talent at the 100-meter butterfly event since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. His crowning achievement came at the European Swimming Championships (25m) in 2023, where Ponti secured a gold medal in the 100m butterfly with a breathtaking time of 48.47 seconds, setting both a new European record (ER) and national record (NR). He has continued to excel in the discipline, breaking his own Swiss record multiple times. Despite limited participation in long-course events, he has won three minor medals at the 2021 and 2022 World Short Course Championships, excelling in the 200-meter butterfly and 50-meter butterfly events.

Additionally, Ponti secured a silver medal at the 2022 European Championships in the 100-meter butterfly. At the 2024 Swiss Championships, Ponti smashed his own Swiss record, and now In the all-time fastest performers in the men’s 100-meter butterfly event, Noè Ponti ranks sixth with a notable time of 50.16 seconds. But what training strategies has he employed to achieve such remarkable success ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024?

His meticulous training propelling him

Noè Ponti has made remarkable strides in the men’s 100-meter butterfly event, particularly evident in his 45 swims, where he consistently surpassed the former Swiss record of 52.28 set by Jeremy Desplanches in April 2019. Ponti’s training regimen, conducted under the guidance of coaches Massimo Meloni and Andrea Mercuri in Ticino, Switzerland, emphasizes meticulous analysis and attention to detail.

Despite his departure from North Carolina State University due to mental fatigue, Ponti has remained dedicated to his swimming career. On the podcast “Inside with Brett Hawke” in 2022, Ponti highlighted the importance of feeling confident in the water, emphasizing his focus on stroke count and finding satisfaction in achieving goals set by his coach.

While Ponti hasn’t always had the opportunity to train with swimmers as fast as himself in Switzerland, he values the motivation gained from training alongside others during aerobic sets and race-specific training. Ponti and his coach meticulously analyze his 100-meter butterfly race, focusing on details like stroke count, kick frequency, and pacing at various points during the race, which has contributed to his continuous improvement.

He said, “Usually, I think in Tokyo, it was 18 20. 18 in the way out and 20 in the way back strokes and fly and even this year it was pretty much the same, I think so it’s always around 17 18 and 19, 20 strokes for the 100m fly.” In 2024, Ponti’s improvement is highlighted by his split comparison, notably improving his back-half performance with a split of 26.34, a significant improvement from his performance at the Tokyo Olympics.

Contention at the Paris Olympics 2024

Since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the landscape of men’s swimming has shifted notably, with the absence of key contenders like Kristof Milak and Caeleb Dressel. Despite setbacks in previous seasons, Dressel’s resurgence signals a potential return to dominance for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
