Much before fencer Lee Kiefer clinched gold in the women’s individual foil and Torri Huske triumphed in the hundred-meter butterfly, it was the men’s freestyle relay team that made waves at the La Defense Arena. The team, composed of Jack Alexy, Chris Guiliano, Hunter Armstrong, and Caeleb Dressel, clocked 3:09.28, outpacing rivals Australia and the Italians. Alexy swam the first leg.

The gold medal, the first for the United States at the Paris Olympics, sent a strong message: American swimming was far from over. It also highlighted the journey of Jack Alexy, the young swimmer from New Jersey, who has been winning medals since his school days. His swimming exploits and personal stories have been gaining considerable traction. One of the most interesting snippets that has become a talking point is the tattoo the swimming champion proudly displays. Let’s delve into the story behind this famous ink that has been attracting quite a bit of attention.

What tattoo did Jack Alexy get?

Members of California University’s swimming team, it seems, follow a rich tradition. It rewards swimmers with a ‘Golden Bear’ tattoo when they score points at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships. In Jack Alexy’s case, though, initially, things didn’t go smoothly. He had high hopes for his performance at the university. But he faced a disappointing first year, barely managing any points to meet the requirement.

Determined to make his mark, the 6-foot-8-inch-tall freestyle specialist made significant changes. The way he trained, his eating habits, and most importantly of all, the way he used to reflect, all underwent alterations. The move paid off handsomely. Not only did his performance improve, but the subsequent season saw him win as well.

Speaking with NBC Sports, he reportedly said, “I was approaching every practice with that mindset and question of asking myself, what do I do today in these next two hours that I have in the water to make an Olympic team or make a world team, or win an Olympic medal? If I didn’t have that failure, I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am now.

What is the significance of Jack Alexy’s Golden Bear tattoo?

Jack Alexy announced his arrival on the world stage. He won five medals at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. But the feat also meant finally getting the ‘Golden Bear’ walk on his shoulders.

The ‘Golden Bear’ has special significance for the state of California. California Grizzly adorns the state flag, which has been in effect since 1911. It also represents the ‘California Golden Bears’, the athletic teams of the University of California, Berkeley, which include sports like baseball, basketball, football, and swimming.

Reportedly, the competitive swimming coverage portal ‘SwimSwam’ has called out Jack Alexy as the ‘next face of American male sprinting’. As the Delbarton School alumnus prepares for the 100-meter freestyle race, all eyes will be on him. The event will see him pitted against some of the swimmers he met at the relay event. Given that he broke the US Open record by closing in at 47.08 at the preliminaries, many will now hope that the young swimmer will chart a new course for American swimming on the world stage.

Do you feel that Jack Alexy has it in him to match Michael Phelps‘s legacy?
