With a world-leading time of 46.39s, he not only beat his formidable rivals but also set a new Diamond League record. Benjamin, previously securing his fourth-straight U.S. title at Eugene back in July in the 400m hurdles, had shown the world his dominance. But it’s crucial to recognize the hurdles he had to overcome to get here. In the lead-up to this moment, Benjamin’s journey was marked by adversity. Injuries, illness, and setbacks had threatened to derail his quest for excellence.

He had battled through pain and illness, even competing at the Doha Diamond League after a bout with COVID. His dedication was evident as he revealed he hadn’t even started hurdling until just a week before the U.S. championships. This victory was also especially sweet coming after his previous defeat at the World Championships in Budapest.

There, in a gripping race, Benjamin had secured a hard-fought bronze. With Norway’s Karsten Warholm as the world record-holder in the next lane, Benjamin had come tantalizingly close to the gold, but it remained just out of reach. Kyron McMaster had scored a surprising silver for the British Virgin Islands, and Benjamin had finished third.

In the aftermath of that race, Benjamin’s words resonated with a deep sense of determination as he said, “I?ve gotten silver these past three championships, it?s no secret, it?s the talk of the town, but at the same time I?m the most consistent person in the field if you look at it… It?s hard to maintain this level of competitiveness and running fast and it?s taken its toll on everyone.”
