Gearing up for the Paris Olympics, Steven Gardiner Lauds Young Blood

Steven Gardiner feels that the stage is set for the youngsters to take over. After struggling a great deal with injuries, the Olympic champion announced his return in style. Clocking an impressive time of 31.99s in 300m, things are looking to fall into the right places for the Olympian. However, despite eyeing for his own glory, Gardiner is also keeping an eye out for the younger generations.

In a recent interview, the 28-year-old detailed his feelings on the same. Gardiner stated that he was happy and looked forward to more talents bursting onto the scene. Thus, needless to say, watching Gardiner compete with the fresh faces will definitely be an exciting affair.

Steven Gardiner has been a legendary figure in the Bahamas, making the country proud after clinching the 400m gold in the Tokyo Olympics. However, the country would need more like Gardiner to establish itself as a dominant force in the track and field realm. While speaking in an interview, Gardiner doubled down on the same.

When asked about his opinion on Wanya McCoy and Terrence Jones, Gardiner said, “I’m happy for them you know…they are young guys they can pick up where other guys left off.”  Well, Gardiner is not exaggerating. These guys are really making a case for themselves. Take McCoy for example. His time of 3:04.09 at the Razorback Invitational is now the NCAA fastest time in the 4x400m discipline this year. McCoy also ran the 200m in 20.46s, creating an indoor PR for himself.

On the other side, Terrence Jones boasts of a Bahamian Junior National Record in 200m clocking at 20.36s. He also holds the 60m indoor record in NCAA at 6.45s. Thus, the prospect of such talents teaming up with Gardiner in the Olympics is surely exciting. However, coming back to Gardiner, the 28-year-old laid out his plan for the year ahead of Paris. 

Gardiner aims to “Stay Healthy”

Gardiner was ravaged by injuries in the past. Recalling the memories, the Olympic champion stated that though it felt awful, he did not search for excuses. However, after kicking off his outdoor season this year on a high, Gardiner looks to focus primarily on his fitness. Speaking about his plans for the year, the Tokyo gold medalist said, “My plans is definitely to stay healthy…do a few races and you know run a good season’s best”.

He also elaborated on the fact that it is very important for him to peak at the right moment. That way, Gardiner would be at his menacing best in the Olympics to strive towards his second gold.
