Most recently, another qualifier emerged for long-distance runners at the 2024 Zurich Maraton de Sevilla in the streets of Seville, Spain. Among the top contenders, a British long-distance runner took a major step towards qualification for the Paris Olympics, setting the standards high for American contenders Conner Mantz and Clayton Young.

According to a post on X by Athletics Weekly, the account shared thrilling details about the 2024 Zurich Marathon de Sevilla that took place on Sunday, February 18, 2024. Among a field of 20 formable contenders, Phil Sesemann, a British runner, completed the marathon in an impressive time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 4 seconds. This time, he secured his qualification for the Paris Olympics. The qualifying mark for the Olympics was 2:08:10, and Sesemann’s time of 2:08:04 meant he just made it in. Sesemann expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support he received throughout his marathon career. Phil Sesemann is now likely to be named on the British marathon team for the Paris Olympics.

At the same men’s race in the Seville Marathon, Ethiopia’s Deresa Geleta won the race with a course record of 2:03:25. And Azmera Gebru won the women’s race in 2:22:13. This impressive performance by Phil Sesemann will pose tough competition for American qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympics, namely Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who blazed the trail at the US Olympic Marathon Trials. The 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials took place on February 3, 2024, and featured over 1,500 elite marathon runners, with only spots available for three men and three women to represent the US Marathon team in the 2024 Paris Olympics. At the men’s race, Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, former teammates and current training partners, finished first and second, respectively, securing their spots on the Olympic team for Paris.
