The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Italy claims to be a track and field contest in the Diamond League discipline. Last year in June, the rusty fields in the Stadio Luigi Ridolfi witnessed a Serbian track and field star, trying her best to save the day for her country. However, the most emphatic performance from her side came in the end part of her long jump, scoring a mere 6.42 meters. The best of the legend was nowhere near.

But that couldn’t create a chink in the 33-year-old track and field homebody’s armor as soon as she posted her phenomenal comeback at season-end. That has been the overall story of Ivana Spanovic Vuleta for the last 11 years.

In 2013, the Serbian athlete Ivana Vuleta registered herself in the Book of Records after having a bronze record at the World Athletics Championships. Since then, the fabled run has shown no chance of going under a gloom. Eventually, that feat led the X-handle of Track Spice to weave a post as a tribute to Vuleta.

The caption read, “Ivana Spanovic through the years 2015-2023. Since 2013, she never missed any year without medal or major trophy in athletics. That’s a whole decade of accolades and honors.” But with that, the post left a gentle reminder in the lines like “One more gold, and she would have all that one long jumper could dream and have in carrer.”

Eventually, it stood Ivana Vuleta in front of another track and field star from the long jump discipline, Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The 61-year-old former Olympic champion has 12 gold medals from major athletic championships – 3 in Olympics, 4 in World Championships, 4 in Goodwill Games, and 1 in Pan American Games. Vuleta is waiting for her 11 glories in the same color.

However, the comparison might receive an argumentative substantiation. The reason being that the latter never won a single gold medal on the Olympic turf, whereas the former had her highest stint on the podium for two consecutive Olympic games. But the Serbian track and field athlete roused a hope to storm into the never-tasted honor in the coming months.

The fairy tale comeback

After a tormented show in Italy, Ivana Vuleta received another heartbreak at the London Athletics Meet, in July 2023. The track and field tussle has the Diamond League recognition as well. But yet another Diamond League failure could make Ivana Vuleta chase success with much more force. In return, the WAC Budapest witnessed the 5’9” athlete sweep 7.14 as a medal-winning performance.

Later in the year, in the Prefontaine Classic of Eugene, Ivana Vuleta equaled herself with the track and field prodigy Ese Brume, solidifying her comeback in the medal-earning route. In the Olympic year, that posed a silver lining of hope for the Serbian legend.
