Only Olympic Gold Medalist Apart From Kurt Angle To Be Drafted in WWE, Announces His Return for Paris Olympics

Exciting news has emerged from the wrestling world, as the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the men’s freestyle 125 kg (275 lbs) recently announced his return to amateur wrestling. Kurt Angle won a gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and then got signed by WWE. This Minnesota Golden Gopher Wrestler became only the second person after Kurt Angle to join this elusive list. Now, breaking a 13-month-long hiatus, he is set to return to wrestling.

It has been almost three years since the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but the memory of the dramatic finish in which Gable Stevenson beat Geno Petriashvili of Georgia to clinch the gold, is fresh on every wrestling fan’s mind. Stevenson will be back on the mat before Paris Olympics 2024.

The US Open is set to take place later this month i.e. 26-20 April 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. And wrestling fans will be treated to watching Gable Stevenson fight it out, as per the Team USA website. The 265-lb wrestler who wrestled for Minnesota throughout his career, be it for his alma mater University of Minnesota, is all set to represent the Gopher Wrestling Club at the upcoming championships.

More than a year ago, Stevenson bid adieu to the sport at the NCAA Championships, where he left his wrestling shoes on the center mat. As any wrestling fan would know, it’s a long-held tradition in the sport, signaling the career end of a wrestler. However, bolstering the US wrestling team’s chances at the Paris Olympics next year, Stevenson is making a return.

The US Open in Las Vegas will mark the first step in qualifying for the US Olympic trials next summer. Fans are excited that Stevenson might fetch another gold for them.

Stevenson’s WWE aspirations are in sync with another Olympic gold

Besides his only Olympic gold medal so far, Stevenson, in his relatively young career, has also won the Pan American Continental championships. The 22-year-old has also secured a great deal with WWE, but that is not all he wants. “I miss being on the mats”, Stevenson told MMA Wrestling. Come 2024, Stevenson will look to repeat his feat from Tokyo and bring the USA another gold medal in wrestling.

After FloWrestling channel announced the news of his return on their social media channels, fans could hardly keep their chill. The Indiana-born 22-year-old wrestler will soon be in action. He will be competing against athlete Hayden Zillmer, the 2022 World Team member at 125 kilograms. Already signed by WWE, Stevenson also revealed who his first target might be in 2021. He might bring more glory to his and his country’s name in the coming year.
