Female Climber Hit by a Rock on the Head, Suffers Tragic Fate at a Popular Spot

Rock Climbing is an exciting and compelling sport. In addition to that, it is also extremely dangerous, and not a sport someone can casually indulge in. While one might think that professionals fare well in the sport, sometimes they too suffer a fate too unfortunate for words. The same devastation has struck the Rock Climbing world once again. A female climber has succumbed to her death after being hit in the head by a rock, while rock climbing in Spain.

The incident took place in El Chorro, Malaga, Spain, which is a famous Rock Climbing sport for many adventure enthusiasts. The climber, whose name is yet to be identified, died on the spot where the incident took place.

Rock Climbing excursion turned fatal

El Chorro is a collection of many climbing spots located 50 kilometers from Malaga. It houses around 800 climbing routes, each of a different grade. Because of its diversified challenges, and its naturally striking beauty, El Chorro is popular amongst climbing enthusiasts.

However, it can be a treacherous territory. This is, unfortunately, what happened to the woman climber who was trying her hand at El Chorro. According to a report by Sur in English, the English language paper in southern Spain, the woman was struck on the head by a rock, which resulted in a fatal injury. The rock fell on the female climber when she was preparing to climb the Lluvia de Asteroides (Rain of Asteroids) vertical route.

The climber was not alone when the accident happened, and her companion is the one who called and informed the emergency services. The Guardia Civil’s GREIM mountain rescue group responded and reached the location. However, the woman took her last breath on the spot of the accident. Her body was then retrieved from the area by the GREIM mountain rescue group. Freak accidents are not unknown to the rock climbing community, and this is not the first time climbers have lost their lives at El Chorro.

The macabre history of El Chorro

El Chorro has witnessed a catena of Rock Climbing hazards, and many deaths resulting from it. Recently, in December 2022, a man fell 60 meters to his death while climbing El Chorro. He and his companion were climbing the Escalera Arabe (Arabian Stairway). Back in 2014, an array of loose rocks fell over two female climbers. While one of them was rushed to the hospital, the other female climber died on the spot.

El Chorro is a dangerous collection of mountains, and falling rocks are a frequent occurrence. El Chorro is also home to the most dangerous hike in Spain, the Caminito del Rey. The Caminito del Rey (King’s Little Pathway) is a terrifying walkway almost a century old and located at a height of 350 meters. Needless to say, every decision to climb this route is a bet against life.
