An unfortunate moment for the US Men’s National Soccer team channeled into a hilarious moment for fans. While they often resort to comedic relief, frustration can also lead to a collective enjoyable moment. The USMNT pitted against the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup 2022. However, their performance has created a new movement online.

Since the team did not score a single goal for a long time, fans dragged in a popular quote by Ice Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. Incidentally, the popular sitcom The Office also featured this quote on an episode. Since the situation fit, fans began tweeting the quote, tagging both Wayne Gretzky and the character Michael Scott.

While the team took harsh blows on the field from the Netherlands, netizens weren’t kind either. A popular capture from the sitcom did rounds online, where a whiteboard behind the character, Michael Scott, had a quote written on it. The words were by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, who said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. Fans gave a new perspective to the quote when they began relating it to the match.

Since the team struggled to score a single goal against the Netherlands, the quote came in handy. Fans went wild, and the quote went viral.

Interestingly, Wayne Gretzky’s quote was first documented in 1983, when he was talking to Bob McKenzie, former editor of The Hockey News. The quote became a huge form of satire after the sitcom The Office used it in one of its episodes with actor Steve Carell acing his role. While the meaning can be taken in a profound manner or in a redundant sense. However, the sitcom played on the satirical side and it immediately grew popular.

Gretzky later paid homage to his own quote during TNT’s NHL playoffs coverage earlier this week. He referred back to the sitcom paying homage to him, making up for a hilarious moment. With the USMNT team losing to the Netherlands, funny situations like these are a saving grace for fans.
