The village of El Rocio welcomes Catholic pilgrims from all over with more than 1 million people visiting over the last weekend of May. Several pilgrims travel from different parts of Spain on the back of a horse or mule. According to The Athletic, the pilgrimage represented an opportunity for Rico to pray for his deceased father, who passed away two years ago.
When the incident happened, a mule tied from across the street from Rico let loose from its constraints and sped towards Rico and his horse. The steed immediately reared up on its hind legs and threw the 29-year-old off. Its legs came crashing down on Rico’s head and neck, making him lose consciousness. However, doctors said that fortunately his spinal cord had not been hit; otherwise, it would have been a different story.
