Surfing is an insane sport. Doing the balancing act while riding a mammoth wave is not everyone’s forte. When one is riding waves 40–50 feet tall, there is no margin of error that the surfer can risk. A fall could mean fatal consequences as the water crashes over you. This is why Joe Rogan had a crazy reaction while watching his friend, surfer Shane Dorian, ride a big wave like it was nothing.

In his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, while in conversation with the comedian Brian Simpson, Joe Rogan could not help but marvel over how dangerous but exhilarating the act of riding the big waves was. They were watching a video of Shane Dorian riding a huge wave, and he couldn’t contain his reaction.

Joe Rogan reacts to Dorian riding a mammoth wave

Shane Dorian is an American surfer who earlier participated in the Champions League but has retired from that and now chases big waves across the globe. When Rogan saw him riding a big wave, he couldn’t help but exclaim, “F**k that. Dude, F**k that. F**k that. I know all you peep… All you Shane Dorians out there you love it. All you Kelly Slaters.”

He is not wrong. Surfers are just bred differently, it seems. They take risks that might not be palatable to the rest of humankind. When Brian Simpson asked who Shane Dorian was, Rogan’s reply was, “He’s.. He’s the best. He’s a big wave surfer.” Joe Rogan hit the bull’s eye with this answer because Dorian is one of the best when it comes to riding the big waves.

When they finally saw Dorian’s clip Rogan went into a rant in his amazement, “Look at the size of that f*king wave he’s on dude. Imagine if that thing comes crashing down on you. Look at the height of that thing. And he’s riding this with his balance on this ever-changing landscape of water. He’s floating with a f*king billion pounds of water overhead ready to collapse on him at any moment and hopefully not knock you unconscious.”

But it seems like Shane Dorian was born to ride the biggest waves out there. According to Surf Europe magazine, he is the best big wave rider in the world.

Shane Dorian and the Big Waves

Patrick Shane Dorian, or “Shane”, is an American surfer who belongs to Kailua-Kona in Hawaii. For 11 years, he toured on the World Championship Tour as a professional surfer. However, Dorian quit professional competitive surfing in the year 2003.

After competing for 11 years, around his late 20s, Dorian felt burnt out from everything and wanted some change in his life. So he started in pursuit of bigger and better waves. However, making this change definitely wasn’t an easy decision. When Dorian decided to delve into big wave surfing, it was not as developed as it is now.

There was no roadmap for him to follow, no particular path that he could take. There was no exact way to just dive into big waves and start earning. So what did Dorian do? He literally wrote the blueprint that made big wave surfing what it is today. Every big wave surfer who has come after Dorian has looked to what he did as an inspiration to make their mark.

The fact which makes Dorian really the greatest of them all is ” the difference between could, and would, is a lot smaller than for any other surfer.” Do you think Dorian is the best Big Wave surfer out there? Let us know in the comments.
