Riding the waves with only a board beneath one’s feet, sure is a divine feeling. Surfing can be equivalent to freedom, as well as make you feel like a conqueror, lording over the rowdy waves. But as freeing and exhilarating as it is, surfing is equally dangerous. Broken bones and gashed skin is, unfortunately, not surprising. While some might get away with minimal scathing, some also become recipients of ghastly injuries.

A 13-year-old surfing sensation recently became a victim of his own surfboard. His boon became his bane, as his very own surfboard became responsible for him getting injured enough to require surgery. Judging from the extent of his injuries, seems like Alejo Valido, the teenage surfing sensation, is lucky to be alive.

The accident took place when the teenage surfer was riding waves at El Quemao, a surfing spot on the northwest coast of the island of Lanzarote. The spot is famous for barreling waves, which is what Alejo Valido was riding when disaster struck. Somehow, the fin of his surfboard got impaled in his back. However, the teenager has undergone surgery and is on his way to recovery. He even took to Instagram to say, “In a couple of months I hope to be at war again (translated) .”

Valido wrote, “I would like to thank… To those who were at the foot of the beach, to the ambulance staff that moved me, to the Jose Molina Orosa Hospital, to the medical plane, to the team that operated on me at the Materno de Gran Canaria and to the staff of the pediatric surgery plant.” Valido might be well on his way to recovery, but the ordeal that he suffered through is terrifying, and he still has a long way to go.

Valido is not the only surfer who has taken a hit while surfing. Recently, a surfer named Coco Nogales also broke his pelvis while surfing in Todos Santos. Both Nogales and Valido suffered injuries that could have potentially proved fatal to them. However, fate shined upon them and they, thankfully, escaped with their lives.
